Bring a chair.
Bring your knitting.
Support democracy.
Peaceful, Present, and Purposeful.
We're a group of knitters and other fiber artists who provide a calm and non-partisan presence at polling sites across the nation. We believe supporting democracy doesn't have to be flashy and you can finish your project (finally) at the same time.
It is difficult to look threatening while making a mitten.
Fiber artists who think democracy is important
We're not an organization and nobody is in charge of you. There's no training, sign-up, or ranks. If you want to do this, you do it, alone or with your friends, at your polling place, on your own account.
What we can do is give you guidelines on where you're allowed to sit, and what to do if something goes wrong.
Slow and calm is the point
With so much frenzy, a person knitting a sock is a visibly peaceful symbol of stability and calm. A knitter's presence is visible from afar and their intentions are clear, without a word. A person standing there watching everyone does not provide the same clarity and relaxing energy.
We believe in the power of presence
Almost everything anyone does at the polls can add tension: a monitor, a camera, someone official-looking with a clipboard. Maybe it's meant well, but it can feel like surveillance or a threat.
This is our way of celebrating voting and democracy, and you can knit while you're doing it.
Come anyway. Somebody might teach you to knit while you sit.
Bring a project, some art to work on, anything calm and intentional. It's a great time to get something done.
You don't need our permission for any of this. Four friends, a Tuesday, and some skeins is enough.
